so we have our circuit overseer this week.
we're getting the crap kicked out of us (figuratively) for our meeting attendance.
we have attendance in the 70% range for some of our meetings.
Look at the 1969 international assembly program, and look at the starting and ending times for all 8 freekin' days.
OMG - I attended every one of those assemblies except for the last one in 2001 (my first year of freedom). Granted, I was a baby at the first one, but still!

I just noticed the same thing - nothing new on Friends since 2-1-05.

it must be about 13 years since i went out in service.
about 15 years since i went out a couple times a month, and about 18 years since i went at least once a week.. i just can't imagine going from door to door anymore.
but to think that we all did it for quite awhile.
About 4 years for me.
I recently helped hand out flyers for a neighborhood block party in my neighborhood. As I walked up to the first door, I had what I could only describe as a mild panic attack. All those years of field service came flooding back into my memory as I tried to knock on the door. I had to take a couple of minutes to compose myself and convince myself that I was doing something good and nice this time.
Undercover, I had a similar experience the first time I went trick-or-treating (as a 33 year old adult) with my friends' kids. Walking from door to door I started to get anxious and when we rang the bell, I realized I was hoping nobody was home - then I realized I was having a service flashback.

as mentioned in my other thread, my daughter lena is having brainsurgery on monday, jan 24. the surgery will last 6-7 hours, so i'm hoping the board members will be willing to make a special effort tomorrow to send positive thoughts, healing energy, good wishes and prayers her way.
we are asking that the surgeon's hands be delicate and skillful and that lena does not bleed overmuch and that brain damage be minimal (if not non-existant).
surgery begins at 8 am eastern standard time (us), but we have to have her to the hospital by 6 am, so this is "good night!
(((Brenda))), I'm starting the positive thoughts for both you and Lena now! Please post the results as soon as you are able. We'll all be waiting to hear the good news!

for those of you who missed it, it was the season opener.
donald has grouped the candidates into two teams (college graduates and high school graduates).
It shouldn't be. While I completely understand your frustration at our being discouraged from getting a university/college degree, you should be proud of what you've accomplished! I've been working since I was 16 years old, so when it comes to knowing how to get things, done, I probably know more than someone with a degree. A degree is certainly useful in many jobs, but not every job. It can make you book smart, but sometimes that doesn't mean squat. For example, I see students with a BA in Economics who can give you a very complex reading of the entire economic structure of the country, but they don't know what 9 x 7 is without a calculator.
Mary: Thanks! I am proud of what I've accomplished . And I agree with you - you and I probably know more than a lot of people with degrees - because experience is an education in itself. You're right too about degrees and book smarts - I've met several people who are educated and have a lot of knowledge - but come up short in the common sense department. However, at the end of the day, it is still pretty intimidating when all of your business partners start talking about their educations, degrees and schools and then they ask you about yours . . .just a constant reminder of how I let an organization have such a strong control of me and my major life decisions.
I especially like the part in the beginning where the High School grads toasted their glasses and said... "We're already winners, because we got nothing to lose".... they just seemed so much "together" than the other group....the kind of strangers you could sit down with, have a drink, and feel totally relaxed with.
Double Edge: I know. That statement was classic!
As I've been reading this, I just think yup, yup, yup... as has been said before, 'thanks WTS'. Had to get my degree after leaving the org so that I could pursue better positions. It took me 6 years and 23k while raising a family and working a full time job.
Jeanniebeanz: That's great that you got your degree. I can't imagine finding the time and energy to go to school now - and I don't even have any children. That's a huge accomplishment!
Nothing beats experience and intelligence for most jobs. Still, I think the right kind of college education gives knowledge and balance that will take one a little higher up the skill level. I guess it also depends on the profession you?re in. I wouldn?t want a ?HS only grad? performing heart surgery on me.

Stefanie, yep, I agree - the HS team seems more together and very energetic!
((Gretchen)) hang in there. You'll find the right job again - soon! I would totally be in your shoes if I were to lose my job. I've been given this opportunity by being able to prove myself each step of the way. But if I were to apply "off the street" at a new company, with people who don't know me or my performance . . then it would be pretty hard to do so without a degree. Any opportunities at your current company?
